Scope and Contents

The Dr. James Leutze Papers document Leutze’s tenure as president of Hampden-Sydney College from 1987-1990, including additional documents related to his subsequent tenure at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The collection includes copies of public addresses, publications, correspondence, photographs, film slides, newspaper clippings, items relating to the presidential inauguration in 1987, and items related to his departure from the College.

Biographical / Historical Note

Born on December 24, 1935 in Charlestown, South Carolina, James Richard Leutze is a notable past president of Hampden-Sydney College. Receiving his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Maryland in 1957, his Master of Arts at the University of Miami in 1959, and his Doctor of Philosophy at Duke University in 1968, he has held several academic positions since his first appointment as legislative assistant to Senator Hubert Humphrey in the years 1963 and 1964. Leutze served in the U.S. Air Force and rose to the rank of captain. In 1968, Leutze joined the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1987, he left the University in order to accept the Presidency of Hampden-Sydney College. In 1990, he resigned the presidency in order to accept the position of chancellor at the University of North Carolina, a position that he maintained until his retirement in 2003. Leutze is a prolific writer and researcher. He is noted for his strong interest in international affairs, evidenced by his creation of the Globe Watch public television program, which aired for 15 years.
