Scope and Contents

The Josiah Bunting III Papers document Bunting’s tenure as president of Hampden-Sydney College from 1977-1987 along with some documents relating to his tenure at Lawrenceville School and later at the Virginia Military Institute. Primarily dating between 1977-1987, the collection includes copies of public addresses, publications, correspondence, photos, newspaper clippings, items relating to the presidential search in 1976, and items relating to his departure and his work after departure.

Biographical / Historical

Josiah Bunting III was born in 1939 at Haverford, Pennsylvania. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps and later went to the Virginia Military Institute and graduated third in his class as an English major and attended the University of Oxford where he received an M.A. He entered the United States Army in 1966 and reached the rank of Major after six years of service. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, Vietnam, and finally West Point where he was an assistant professor of history and social sciences. Bunting is an avid writer and wrote a novel titled The Lionheads in 1972 which was a writing based on his own personal accounts put into a fictional setting of characters. Bunting left West Point in the same year and served as a faculty member of the Naval War College between 1973-1974. He later served shortly as president of Briarcliff College and of Hampden-Sydney College between 1977-1987. At Hampden-Sydney, Bunting updated the Rhetoric Program and Western Civilization program of the college. He also nearly tripled the college’s endowment through the Campaign for Hampden-Sydney. After his departure, he served as the headmaster of the Lawrenceville School from 1987 to 1995, Superintendent of the Virginia Military institute from 1995 to 2003. After his departure he has been involved with many organizations including his current position as Chairman of the Friends of the National World War II Memorial which he was appointed to in 2015.
